More than 75 volunteers teamed up to renovate the home of Esperanza Spalding on Friday in National City. Spalding is a single mom caring for her son Willie who is living with muscular dystrophy. Vons employees, along with Easter Seals and Rebuilding Together San Diego volunteers helped raise $25,000 to perform the extensive renovations.

Teachers, students and staff of Monarch School held an open house on Thursday to show off a new campus that will open this fall at 1625 Newton Avenue. The building will soon be remodeled and turned into a state-of-the-art facility. Monarch School is a San Diego-based K-12 public school for children affected by homelessness.

Talawanda High School Talent Show

Talawanda High School hosted its annual Talent Show on Monday, Nov. 21 in the crowded cafeteria. Students and families were serendaded by sweet harmonious violen melodies and entertained by Taekwondo. All proceeds will benefit the Talawanda High School Choir Program.

Oxford Habitat for Humanity dedicates home

Oxford Habitat for Humanity dedicated the first of nearly 20 homes on Sunday, Oct. 2. The homes will be built throughout two subdivisions off of Hester Road an house roughly 100 people in need. Donors, volunteers, Habitat staff and community members joined for the dedication.

On a crowded and sunny afternoon at Petco Park on Sunday, the Padres just couldn't finish the game, losing 6-3 to the Miami Marlins who completed the series sweep. The Padres were tied 2-2 after starting pitcher Joe Wieland hit a two-run double, but the pen couldn't quell the opposing team as the Marlins scored four runs in the 8th.

The stadium at Cathedral Catholic High School saw different action than the norm for Friday nights, hosting a rugby match against St. Augustine High School. Cathedral, vying for a spot in the Southern California Youth Rugby Championship game, defeated St. Augustine 57-14. Cathedral goes on to face Wilson High School in the championship game.

No. 17 San Diego State Aztecs shot a mere 31 percent from the field, but managed to hang on for the win in a nail biter against the Boise State Broncos. It all came down to a last second shot, a three point attempt for the win from Boise State. The ball rattled in and then out of the basket as the Aztecs breathed one big sigh of relief.

Ohio University met conference rival at Miami University on Fri., March 4 in the final regular season matchup of the season. Miami's Julian Mavunga lead the team with 23 points in the victory over Ohio.

Talawanda High School celebrated its homecoming week by crowning the homecoming king and queen prior to the game vs. Ross High School. Ross won the game 29-0 on Friday, Sept. 30. Ross imporves to 5-1 while Talawanda (0-6) continues to slide, unable to notch their first win of the season.

Monroe High School hosted Talawanda High School on Friday, Sept. 9. Prior to the game, Monroe honored first responders and those who died during 9/11 with a special ceremony, a gun salute and a sky diving team that brought in the game ball and an American flag. Monroe won the game 21-7.
